PEOPLE in East Cornwall must step up their social distancing says Cornwall’s senior councillor for Public Health as cases of Covid-19 rise in the district.

Numbers of positive Coronavirus cases have started to increase along the border in East Cornwall, and importantly, there has been a change in the mode of transmission, said Cllr Sally Hawken, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Wellbeing and Public Health, who represents Liskeard East.

Messages have been sent out via GP surgeries in the Liskeard, Saltash and Rame areas and this is a coordinated effort between Cornwall Council and NHS Kernow.

Although in this part of England positive case numbers are relatively low, it’s now that residents need to be most vigilant to prevent a bigger spike.

“We’re seeing cases continue to rise in East Cornwall and it’s vital that we put the brakes on this," said Cllr Hawken.

"These are cases that are being transmitted within groups of families and friends, allowing the virus to easily move from household to household. In the past the virus has been linked to workplace outbreaks which are easier for us to contain, but this change in pattern of spread shows us that we all really need to be careful.

“Even though we’re currently in lockdown, people need to remember the basic guidance – wash your hands regularly, use a face covering when social distancing is not possible and try to keep your distance from those not in your household.

“Following these simple steps could make a significant difference in reducing the transmission of COVID-19 and help protect you and your friends, colleagues and family from the virus.”

Dr Ruth Goldstein, Deputy Director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly said: “We need to behave in our homes as we do when we are at work or out shopping. We need to be really strict on regular hand washing when you come in and out of the house. Don’t reuse face coverings, make sure they are washed or disposed of after every use. If someone in your house tests positive. please keep your distance if possible. We know this sounds extreme but please try to avoid sharing beds, crockery, towels etc, to help avoid the virus spreading around your whole family”.

On the limited occasions that you are allowed outside please remember the following:

• Keep 2m apart

• Wash your hands, or use hand sanitizer, regularly

Wear a face covering while you are in an enclosed public place
