Members of Callington’s Rotary Club will be ‘going purple for Polio’ next month as part of a global campaign.
Rotarians have pledged to plant 1,000 purple crocus bulbs around Callington in November, and they will be wearing purple bobble hats as they carry out their work.
The bulbs should provide a welcome splash of colour in early spring – as well as being a reminder of the efforts to eradicate polio, said a Rotary spokesperson, who added: ‘Purple has been chosen because when a child from a third world country is inoculated against polio, their first finger is dyed purple as visible evidence they have had their injection.
‘Rotary worldwide has been one of the constant supporters of the campaign to eradicate this terrible disease, and Callington Rotary will continue to do its part.’
