Men who work in the fishing industry will soon be getting health checks available.

The NHS Health Check Outreach team, which helps deliver the free national programme, is looking to target groups of men who traditionally keep their health problems to themselves.

They often only visit their doctor when symptoms are well advanced, making their conditions harder to treat successfully.

The team have previously worked with farmers and fishermen, and members say they are returning due to the success of the recent campaigns.

The Health Checks examine several elements – height, weight, body mass index, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, which are used to calculate the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.

The check itself takes 20-30 minutes and includes a discussion of the results and any steps which can be taken, for instance to reduce cholesterol or blood pressure.

Men actively working in the fishing industry, have recently retired, and are aged between 40-74 years, can just turn up and have a check for free.

For more information about Health Checks, see NHS Choices or call the Promoting Health Information Line (PHIL) on 01209 313419.

The nearest event to South East Cornwall is on April 5 from 7am to 1pm in Mevagissey.
