AN OUTBREAK of the coronavirus has been confirmed at a care home in South East Cornwall.
The home, which can accommodate up to 36 residents, is run by Cornwall Care, who said it was the first instance of the virus it had had in Liskeard. It added that there were no ongoing outbreaks at any of its other 16 care homes in Cornwall, which include the Chyvarhas Care Home in Callington.
Cornwall Care said it did not yet know how the virus got into the home. It tests its employees and residents whenever anyone has symptoms – but regular testing for staff is not yet available, it said.
Anne Thomas, CEO of Cornwall Care, said: ’We have strict infection control measures in place at Pengover House but sadly a coronavirus outbreak has occurred there.
’In accordance with public health guidelines, we test residents and staff when anyone in the home displays symptoms, but we are currently unable to access repeated proactive testing. Hopefully this will become available to all care homes soon.
’Our staff are fully prepared and trained for coronavirus outbreaks and their response at Pengover has been exemplary. We don’t yet know how the virus got into the home but a thorough investigation to try and find out is underway.’
