THE headteacher of Callington Community College is to leave after ten years in charge. Steve Kenning will leave his post as head at the end of the academic year and will take the headship at the Harris City Academy in Crystal Palace, London. Since taking over as headteacher of Callington, the school has become one of the only colleges in the country to have specialised status in four areas – sport, music, leaving education and training. 'I have been here for ten years now and I feel I'm ready for a change,' he said. 'I have always believed in setting myself new challenges, and I feel I am ready for one now. 'My time here has been great and, at the stage I'm leaving, it really couldn't be any better. 'Our main focus has always been on helping the children achieve their goals and letting them grow.' Deputy headteacher Paula Ramsden said: 'Since Mr Kenning has been here, he has helped introduce several support systems, giving students a sense of belonging and raising student self-esteem. 'He has worked really hard in raising the aspirations of the students and the community, which has helped to raise the academic standards of the school.' Mr Kenning was delighted with how the school has progressed since he has been headteacher. 'It's a great school now and is fit for this century,' he added. 'The school plays a great part in the community with all the facilities it offers and really brings everyone together.' A new headteacher will be appointed within the next few months, but won't take over until January, which will mean acting headteacher and deputy headteacher roles will be given to members of the senior team at the college.
