A Callington couple are encouraging others to reach out the hand of friendship and welcome others in the light of recent attacks on foreigners in Britain.
Jane Weatherby and Ian Richards are volunteers with Host UK, a scheme which matches adult international students studying in this country, with host families for a day or a weekend.
The students are given the chance to explore a part of the country they might not have otherwise seen and are given a home-cooked meal in friendly company; the hosts also gain friendship and an insight into another culture.
‘In the light of the racist attacks, we wanted to let people know there are many people trying hard to offer the hand of friendship to international people,’ said Jane.
The couple, who run a bed and breakfast near Callington, say they host about three weekends a year.
‘We’ve had numerous students stay with us from all over the world, including China, the Yemen and Moldova,’ said Jane.
‘One of the most interesting visitors for us was an Iraqi who was studying for his PhD at Plymouth University. He came with his whole family. Because he was close by we were able to continue the friendship; they stayed several times and now we frequently get emails from Iraq.
‘The work of Host has always been important but is even more so following the very sad events that have happened.
‘I would urge anybody interested in doing their part to show solidarity and friendship to international people to get in touch with Host UK.
‘We can all do our bit to make this country and the world a little friendlier.’
