A group of people from Liskeard are going to the Philippines to help build a foster home.

Working with a small charity called Tiwala, a team of 18 from the Greenbank Christian Centre will leave on June 29 for a month.

Deb Piper, youth pastor at the centre, said: 'We will be helping with the projects that they are already running – a kindergarten, an after schools club, etc but the main reason we are going is to start building the first foster home.

'Each home costs £5,000 we are at the moment raising this money through various events and schemes one of which is "buy a brick".'

In the evenings a group will be working in Tabasco city and Legaspi to work with and feed children on the streets.

'Some of the children have been abandoned, some are sent out by their parents to beg.

Dangerous

'It's a really dangerous place for them to be, some encountering abuse and others turning to drugs.

'Tiwala wants to build six houses on their farm, each housing ten boys and a mama and papa. The boys will be educated at the farm for at least six months before they are integrated into a local school.'

The team have already managed to raise half the money needed to buy the home and more fundraising events have been planned to raise more.

Events in the next few weeks include a concert by Pelynt Male Voice Choir at Greenbank Christian Centre on Friday, April 17, at 7.30pm, and a band showcase, featuring Liskeard band, the Vinyls, at the public hall at 7.30pm on Friday, May 8.
