A GROUP that helps people with autism and their families is hoping for a cash boost through a supermarket scheme.

Get Together Cornwall’s Wild and Alive with Autism Project is a family-run, not-for- profit community interest company for those with, or awaiting, a diagnosis of autism and Aspergers.

At sessions every second Friday of the month from 6pm to 7.30pm at Dobwalls Memorial Hall, the group aims to provide a safe and understanding environment where members can go and take part in planned activities, and interact and share in their own experiences, while finding support.

Now the organisation is hoping for a boost from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme. The initiative sees money raised from carrier bag sales being awarded to community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region are shortlisted to receive cash, and shoppers vote for their favoured group.

Get Together Cornwall is one of the groups on the shortlist.

The group is building a therapeutic outdoor activities centre to offer support to people living with autism and Asperger’s by creating opportunities for work experience and social interaction.

The Wild and Alive with Autism Project aims to provide work experience for the teenage members of the group, with forest school sessions to encourage confidence and teach members horticulture through hands-on learning in a woodland environment.

Camping and outdoor cooking activities will be on offer for individuals as well as families and being able to house animals will enable a wide range of therapeutic care and play to be offered.
