A SUPERMARKET'S planning approval will see £200,000 spent on regeneration in a South East Cornwall town. Discount supermarket chain Lidl was given planning permission to build a new store on the corner of Gilston Road, Carkeel, Saltash. This week's decision, which councillors voted 12- two in favour of, will see Lidl donate £43,600 to the Highway's Agency for improvements to Carkeel roundabout and £200,000 towards the regeneration of Saltash. The move was backed by Saltash Town Council, but concerns were raised by the Saltash and District Chamber of Commerce about the effect the store might have on trade in the town centre. A previous application had been refused by Caradon in December 2005 despite more than 1,500 letters of support. Councillors were concerned about the loss of employment land as the current building is used for office purposes. Cllr Jim Candy said: 'We already have enough closed shops in Saltash and this development would only exasperate that.' However, Caradon District Council's Planning Committee West was told that the land offered limited value in employment terms. The Lidl store was accepted subject to a number of conditions including deliveries being limited to between 9.30am-4.30pm and the 30 full- and part-time jobs created being given to people living in the Saltash area. Lidl will also be banned from having a fresh fish or meat counter, delicatessen, dry cleaners, pharmacy, and photo-shop. The store will also not be allowed to sell tobacco, lottery tickets or offer Post Office services.
