HUNDREDS of thousands more volunteers have signed up to support the most vulnerable people in the country as they self-isolate.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked the 560,000 people who had already signed up as NHS volunteers. The Government then extended its target to 750,000, and had recruited the extra people by today.

Those who have registered will be tasked with driving medicines from pharmacies to patients, bringing patients home from hospital, and making regular phone calls to check on and support people who are staying on their own at home.

The scheme was launched in order to assist the one and a half million people in the UK who have been advised to self-isolate at home for 12 weeks to shield themselves from the coronavirus.

Many such initiatives had already been started by town and parish councils and by community groups in their own local areas.
