CALLINGTON is continuing to make good progress towards becoming the first town in South East Cornwall to achieve Fairtrade status. Following months of work by a special committee the town is close to achieving it's goal. To mark this, a special Fairtrade event will be held in Callington Town Hall on Monday, March 5 from 1-5pm. The event takes place during the nationwide Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from February 26 to March 10. The afternoon will feature the judging of a special poster competition promoting Fair trade. that is open to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Callington's feeder schools. Winning entries will be posted on the Fairtrade- Callington website. There will also be displays of a wide range of Fairtrade products, where they come from, and stories of how communities are being transformed. An all-age quiz and games have also been organised. To qualify for Fairtrade status the town must meet a number of requirements including: l Fairtrade products readily available in shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments. l Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places, such as estate agents and hairdressers, and community organisations, like churches and schools. The town council have backed the scheme by serving Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings. Jane Murray, chairwoman for the local Fairtrade Committee, has spearheaded the local initiative and is enthusiastic about the response she has been getting from shopkeepers in town. Businesses who have signed up to support this initiative are being recognised by having certificates to put in their shop window.
