TOWNS looking to licence their streets for entertainment will not have to pay – Caradon District Council has said. New rulings meant that any non-religious performance would need to take place in a licenced premises, or groups would have to pay £21 for a temporary events notice. To overcome the decision, Callington and Liskeard town councils looked at licencing areas of their towns, something the district council has said will now be free. A spokeswoman for Caradon said the decision was taken to enable town and parish councils to host festivities that promote Cornish culture. 'A good example of this would be the Polperro festival,' she said. 'They have a lot of street performers and singers that would normally have to apply for a temporary events notice.' For Callington, the process has already begun. More than 70 signs have been posted around the town listing the proposed streets. Among the roads and areas taken in by the proposed scheme are Callington cemetery, Broadmead, St Mary's Church grounds and the town's parks. Liskeard Town Council is also set to apply for some of its streets to be licenced.
