East Looe Town Trust is organising a local produce market in the Guildhall Rose Garden Piazza on Good Friday, April 6, from 10am-3pm. Trust chairman and local councillor David Bryan said the Trust wanted to support local producers of food, drink and crafts while offering the people of Looe and holidaymakers alike the opportunity to sample some truly local Cornish products. The initiative is in response to requests from the people of Looe and from comments received at various MCTi consultation events over the last year. The launch day will provide a hearty harvest of food to taste and to buy from local producers as well as craft, art and music. If the trial event is successful then it is hoped the Looe market will continue every first and third Friday of the month, all year round. Market-goers can expect to find eggs, bread, meat, dairy, organic vegetables, smoked fish and choicest chutneys and jams among the items on sale. Edwina Arkell, MCTi vice chairman and local councillor, said: 'Local markets not only support local businesses, but can help to minimise carbon emissions by reducing food miles i.e. the distance our food travels to reach us, thus ensuring freshness and quality. 'Local producers sell their goods directly to the customer; there are no middle men. This makes high quality produce more affordable, whilst giving a fair price to the producer.'
