St Mellion were beaten seven and a half to four and a half by Newquay at Perranporth in the Cornwall team championship final.
In the morning foursomes the only winners for St Mellion were Adam Frayne and Andy Nicholson who defeated Peter East and Rob Randall by 2-1. The final St Mellion pairing of Simon Bertenshaw and Richard Ackland halved their match but the pairings of Brian Rickard with Alan Poole and Peter Southcott with Darren Desmond both lost. Ninth man for St Mellion Stuart Walsh won his match 3-2.
Going into the eight afternoon singles, the score was 2 1/2 - 1 1/2.
Richard Ackland was soundly beaten 6-5 by Ian Veale; Peter Southcott bt Rob Tredinnick 2-1; Adam Frayne bt Charlie Phillips 2-1; Alan Poole lost to Peter Rogers 1 down; Darren Desmond bt Pete East 3-2; Brian Rickard lost to Rob Randall 3-2; Simon Bertenshaw lost to Kevin Mula 3-1; Andy Nicholson lost to Phil Clayton 4-3.
This left Newquay clear and deserving winners.
The trophy was presented to the Newquay Club Captain Paul Hoyt by Cornwall Golf Union President David Cann.

On Monday the LOOE Vets played a mafia with doubles scores on odd holes. The winners were Norman Hill-Male, Jim Cook, Harry Foster with 105 pts. Richard Essam, John Richards w/c Dave Turner came second with 99 pts followed by Harold Ferris, Brian Taylor, Jack Hawkens with 95. Thursday the vets entertained the ladies for our friendly match which was won by the vets 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 although the scores did not reflect the closeness of many of the games.
The vets not taking part in this match played a single stableford with Arthur Northfield taking the honours on count back from Bob Newman with 36 pts, third place went to Brian Duck (33). Other scores were George Robson, Norman Jenkins, John Jones (31), Alan Reed (30), William Aust (29), Des Adams (28), Bob Kinch, Frank Parkes (26), Mike Phillips (26), Ray Taylor (21), Dave Bloye (19), Noel Aitken (16).
Now the excitement of the Winter League is over, LOOE BINDOWN now embark on it's summer programme of competition. In very summer-like conditions the first of these was held last Sunday, the Fisleigh Trophy, which is a large ship's wheel. Of course, it was appropriate that it was won by two of the Club's Navy lads.
The competition is a foursomes (alternate shots) Stableford competition. Home golfers often experience difficulty in this type of format, although not so for Jules Hignett and Terry Gibson who destroyed the field, winning by a clear four points with 41 points. There were no less than five pairs on 37 points and the best of these were Ian Hawke and Paul Shiel who just edged out Danny Lewis and Norman Hill-Male on the back six, who in turn kept Richard Keith and Eddie Shapland on the back nine.
