A busy week at Looe saw no less three major competitions taking place. Last Wednesday - Eclipse day - many of the club's members and friends gathered to watch the event, and enjoyed a barbecue provided by staff. This was a prelude to the Eclipse Stableford, which saw 70 competitors taking part and all leaving with an commemorative eclipse ball marker.

The Men's competition was won by Phil Green, who finished with an excellent score of 47 points. He was closely followed by Trevor Frasle with 46, but there was quite distance between the leading pair and the next group of players, led by John Spurgeon, with 41 points.

In the Ladies' event, Vera Bennett took the honours from Sam Jarrett on count-back, both finishing with 40 points.

Saturday saw the main event of the year, the Club Championship. With two events in one, played over 36 holes for the Scratch Cup and Coronation Cup (Handicap), it was a case of youths to the fore. In the morning, Ed Goodaire set the pace with his best gross score and best handicap. The nearest challengers in the Scratch were Carl Channon and Ben Jenkins, whilst Steve Hobb and Danny Lewis provided the competition on the Handicap side. The question was whether or not 14-year-old Ed Goodaire could hang on- and he answered that question with an emphatic 'yes' to take the Coronation Cup with a total of 132.

He was narrowly pipped by Ben Jenkins, another youngster, in the Scratch Cup, although Ed can console himself with the fact that he finished four shots ahead of his father Alan in this competition. Another steady round of the afternoon saw Steve Hobbs finish second in the Handicap with 134, whilst a very solid performance from Ian Hawke meant he finished in third place in the Handicap.

Sunday saw two qualifying rounds for the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall trophy. Father and Son team of Matt and Tony Edwards finished first with 45 points, while Colin Hough and Chris Nicholls also qualified with 44 points. The event will be held at Carlyon Bay shortly.
