THE third round of the LOOE Winter League was played on Sunday. Once again good scoring was the order of the day. Malcolm Tate with the occasional support (particularly on the back nine) from Paul Shiel finished well clear of two pairs in second place with 47 points. Andy Toms encouraged by his senior partner Steve Hobbs and the dynamic duo of Pete Densham and Barrie Evans took second place on 44 points.

Many competitors are looking over their shoulders - who was in third place - why none other than John Rowe who has made a very good start in this season's Winter League with his partner Brian Norman on 43 points.

WITH the bad weather of late it was surprising (but due to the hard work of the green staff) LOOE Vets were able to play on Thursday their traditional match with the ladies. The vets fielded a very strong team and won overall 8-0.

The individual results are as follows: Richard Essam/Alan Hunstone bt Margaret Jackman/Marjorie Thorley 4&3; Tony Collis/Jeff Buckland bt Sheila Tillbrook/Shirley Ferris 2&1; Gerald Bassett/Brian Taylor bt Vera Bennett/Jill Peake 2&1; Richard Fletcher/Ray Taylor bt Jenny Dunbar/Clarisse Bariball 2&1; Ed Marris/Norman Taylor bt Wendy Buckland/Yvonne Greenaway 3&2; Norman Allen/John Blake bt Pat Hodge/Angela Bond 2&1; Harold Ferris/Andre Radondy bt Sylvia Abbiss/Alison Bond 2 up; Frank Carpenter/Jim Cook bt Margaret Elsworth/Phyl Petipher 4&3.

The odds and sods of the vets played a single stapleford with Don Clarke showing his consistency taking the honours with an excellent score of 41, with second place going to Arthur Hallam (our critic of the handicaps) with 38, third place on count back Mike Rowe from Norman Jenkins 37. Harry Foster and Arthur Northfield 35, Ray Petipher 33, John Richards 32, William Aust and Bill Wilkins 30, Rob Ingold 29, Jack Hawkins and Alan Reed 25, Jack Baxendale 22, John Insley 19.

As an aside in my last report I stated that the October medal was own by our serious golfer. I had a nudge from a member that this inferred that not all of us were in this category!
