A COUPLE who met when they were neighbours, living just six houses away from each other, celebrated their golden wedding at Saltash on Saturday, April 2. The couple celebrated their day with two of their bridesmaids and their best man, as well as around 100 guests including family and friends, at the Sir Robert Jeffrey Hall, Landrake, with a Cornish Ceilidh evening. Terry and Leslie Stevens were just 17 and 16 years old when they first met, and were eventually married at the old St Boniface Church, St Budeaux, Plymouth. The two former bridesmaids at the golden wedding were Jean Newell, Leslie's sister, and Gloria Stevens, Terry's sister, and best man, Charlie Trick. Terry was born in Devonport and attended Mount Street Primary School, He did three years' service in the Army Royal Artillery, serving in Egypt and Cyprus, and reaching the rank of sergeant. Terry is now a member of Saltash Bowling Club. Leslie was born at Camels Head where she attended Camels Head School before becoming a nursing auxiliary working at Devonport Hospital and later for Saltash Health Centre. For 30 years she was a member of St John Ambulance Brigade in Saltash and became a Officer Sister of the Order. Leslie was a Citizen of the Year in Saltash in 1988. Terry and Leslie are members of both the Saltash Third Forum and of St Nicholas and St Faith Church. The couple have two children, a son, Paul, and daughter, Claire, as well as grandchildren Victoria, Joseph and Louis. The couple did not want presents but raised £400 for charity.
