When celebrating their golden wedding during a hailstorm at Saltash on Saturday, James and Margaret Norman recalled that they married on a fine day at Greenbank Methodist Church, Plymouth.
To mark their golden day they welcomed guests to their home - including one of their bridesmaids, Joyce Townsend, and her husband.
Mr Norman was born in Plymouth and left school aged 14 to become an apprentice shipwright in Devonport Dockyard. He also worked for three years in Singapore, and later became a supervisor in l960 before retiring aged 61.
His wife, also born in Plymouth, was a shop assistant for the city's Co-operative Society, in the grocery department, where she worked with Mrs Townsend.
The happy couple, who were introduced to each other by a mutual friend, have one son, John, and four grandchildren.
Mr Norman has been a member of Saltash Male Voice Choir for over 12 years, and his wife is a member of a club at St Budeaux Baptist church. Both now attend Saltash Wesley Church.
They were visited by Saltash mayor, Mona Tomaszewska, and her husband and consort John, who brought flowers and chocolates.
The golden wedding cake was made by their daughter-in-law, Diane Norman. In the evening they went out for a meal with the family.
