A COUPLE who met when they lived opposite each other in Reading celebrated their golden wedding in Saltash on Saturday. They spent their morning at home with visitors and in the afternoon out for a family meal with their son, his wife and friends. Douglas and Iris Pryor were married at Christchurch Church, Reading and they have one son, Philip and grandson, Joshua aged 16. Douglas was born in Liverpool and joined the Merchant Navy as a chef from 1944 to 1953 and then he worked for the biscuit firm of Huntley and Palmers as a chef near Reading. Later he worked as a hygiene manager for Devonshire Foods at Brixham in Devon and eventually retired at the age of 60. During the time at Brixham Douglas took part in many shows with Brixham Operatic and Dramatic Society, in musicals and plays, and also pantomimes. Iris was born in Reading and attended the George Palmer School, leaving at 14 to become a clerk at a printing works where she stayed for 11 years. She too belonged to the Operatic Society often helping out behind the scenes. She also spent many years as a film extra and also doing some modelling for the Bella Magazine. Ten years ago ill health forced Iris to give up her modelling and then they decided to move to Saltash five years ago to be nearer their son and his wife, who live at St Germans. The couple said they did not think that after years of ill health that they would actually reach their golden wedding but were thrilled to be celebrating their special day.
