THE Christmas lights were switched on in Torpoint with cheers from a big crowd as mayor Eddie Andrews and special guest Leanne Ward, Miss Cornwall 2011, performed the switch-on with Kelly Jane Brown leading the countdown.
Organiser John Tivnan, of Torpoint Community Events, worked tirelessly as always and, despite some hiccups, local people rallied around and ensured there was music and entertainment for everyone.
Local businessman Andy Martin stepped in with less than an hour to spare to provide the sound system and music.
Kelly Jane Brown with her dance group from Coppola School of Performing Arts danced for the crowds.
There were also charity stalls and fairground rides in Fore Street.
Mince pies
Members of Torpoint Community Church handed out free mince pies and mulled wine for everyone to enjoy.
Right after the switch on, Father Christmas arrived in the Lions Club sleigh and greeted all the children as he handed out sweets and listened to their Christmas wishes.
Thanks were given to Torpoint Community Events and Mr Tivnan, as well as Andy Martin, who provided the sound system and music, and Kelly Jane Brown who compered the evening.
Mr Tivnan said: 'I would like to thank Andy, Kelly and the public for their support.
'I was disappointed that, having been promised support with stalls and fairground rides, so few turned up.
'Without support, the future of the lights could be in jeopardy.'
