The Callington Cricket Club first XI have had a successful and enjoyable season in the Jolly's Cornwall Cricket League Premier Division.
After strengthening the side over the close season, with all-rounder Rob Harrison joining the club from Newquay as a professional, and his county colleague Matt Robins making the short journey from Werrington, Callington started their league campaign in fine style, taking maximum points from their first four games, but some inconsistent form in mid-season saw them slip down the table.
In all they played 18 games and finished fourth with 238 points. It must be remembered that the Callington team is still a very young one, with seven regular players aged 21 or under.
Eight players played every game in the league campaign. Top run scorer was Cornwall player Dan Davis, with 618 league runs, plus another 268 in the 50/50 Cup at the beginning of the
season.
Davis topped the batting averages with 38.62 (league only), closely followed by 17-year-old Jake Libby, who scored 467 runs at an average of 31.13. Jake also made the top league score of 108 not out at home to Falmouth on May 22.
Luke Davis weighed in with 406 runs and Robins 386, although he scored another 227 runs in the 50/50 Cup.
Robins also topped the bowling averages, taking 24 league wickets at a cost of 15.54 apiece. Rob Harrison took 30 wickets at 19.33, with skipper Jim Shorten and Aidan Libby taking 24 and 21 wickets respectively.
The best bowling performance came from Harrison, who claimed seven for 60 against his former team-mates at Newquay on May 29.
Luke Davis took 15 catches standing at first slip, with wicketkeeper Joe White claiming 13 catches and six stumpings behind the stumps.
Top league score was the 243 for seven at home to Falmouth on May 22, and all the players will want to forget the 70 all out at St Just on July 3.
Callington also reached round three of the National Club Championship, before losing at Bridgwater on June 27. They also reached the final of the Hawkey Cup, where they were beaten by St Austell on July 11.
The signs are that this young and vibrant side will stay together, so the club goes into the close season with every confidence, and looking forward to another highly successful campaign in 2011.
