A FILMMAKER and his ten-year-old daughter have transformed a cancelled event into an action-packed 90-minute programme.
The popular Downderry Ocean Day, last staged in the village hall in 2015, was set to make a comeback this year with interactive stalls from the National Marine Aquarium, Cornish Seal Sanctuary, RNLI, Marine Biological Association and more.
When the lockdown put paid to the plan, organiser Anthony Butler set about finding a way to involve all the contributors in a new online project that could be accessible to everyone at home.
The result is a 90-minute film, the Ocean Show, with content on marine wildlife, the environment, surfing, scientific experiments and a lot of madcap fun from the two presenters, Anthony and his daughter Ella.
Anthony asked all the participating groups to send in videos and then he and Ella acted as hosts presenting each segment.
The whole film was put together in the family’s conservatory in Seaton.
‘Organising so many different contributors and editing their pieces was tricky. I never expected it to end up as long as it is,’ said Anthony.
‘Ella and I had about 20 costume changes. The most challenging bit was that normally I’d be in charge of the camera and lighting while someone else is in front of the camera, but this time I was doing both.
‘We filmed most of it on my 40th birthday, and my daughter and I had a lot of fun. Some of the funnier outtakes are in the end credits.’
