CROWDS gathered to watch HMS Raleigh exercise its right to the Freedom of the Town. The parade of six platoons formed up and marched from Trevol Road, along the length of Antony Road, led by the band of HM Royal Marines. The parade, made up from officers to trainees, were led to Cambridge Field, where the parade command was handed to Commander Trevor Gulley, a proud moment for him having been born and brought up in Torpoint. Mayor, Julie Martin was then invited to inspect the parade with HMS Raleigh commanding officer, Commodore David Pond. Crowds surrounded the field to watch the whole event, along with the rest of the town council and invited guests. The mayor said; 'This is a unique event and I am thrilled that the exercising of the rights of the Freedom of Torpoint by HMS Raleigh is occurring during my year of office as Mayor. Torpoint needs HMS Raleigh and HMS Raleigh needs Torpoint! This ceremony demonstrates the bond between the two.' The Mayor then presented the symbolic Key to Torpoint‚ to Commodore Pond, before Commander Gulley led the parade back through Torpoint, with flags flying, swords drawn and bayonets fixed. Mayor and Commodore Pond took the salute outside the Comrades Club. Giving the parade a double local feel was Chief Petty Officer Linda Cooper, who was also born and brought up in the town.
