Town to enter
bloom contest
THE Fowey in Bloom committee are intending to enter the Britain in Bloom contest once again.
The news pleased mayor, Rhona Foster, who said: 'Many will remember the last time Fowey won this competition - quite a few years ago. On that occasion there was a real concerted effort to gain the award, so let's see the same commitment this year. Fowey is quite capable of winning if everyone does their bit, so let's see it happen again.'
The decision was taken at Fowey in Bloom's annual meeting at which Aileen Chitty and Evelyn Moore were re-elected as chairperson and treasurer, with Janet Baker standing down as secretary and Pamela Dalley being elected to take over.
The meeting heard that two new beds on New Hill Road were being prepared by the town council, who would maintain them. A majority vote decided on the Britain in Bloom entry.
On May 18 at 9.30am in the church hall, during du Maurier week, the organisation will be holding its annual plant sale, together with a cake stall, refreshments and a bring and buy plant stall.
Ball and concert
YEAR 11 pupils at Fowey community college are laying the final plans for their leaving ball, set to take place later this month.
The ball will mark the beginning of study leave for GCSE examinations. Plans are also being made for a lunchtime concert which the college's expressive arts faculty's music department will be giving on the town quay as part of the Daphne du Maurier festival. The concert is to include solos, as well as items by the college orchestra and the year 10 GCSE music group. The last item will be the first performance of 'The First Flower' which has been especially composed for a concert the group is taking part in the following evening. The concert 'The Spirit of Eden' will be in aid of the mayor of Restormel's charities and will take place in the educational wing of the Eden Project.
