A FOOD parcel scheme to help those most in need has been started up again in Saltash.

Former mayor and publican Gloria Challen says that there are local families facing redundancies and finding themselves in financial difficulties.

She said: “Earlier this year whilst I was still mayor of Saltash I delivered small food parcels to many needy Saltash residents during the time that we were running the Community Food kitchen at the Railway Hotel.

“I and my small team carried out this voluntary service as I was shocked to see how many vulnerable members of our community were struggling to make ends meet whilst waiting for their Government funding to come through, and during lockdown.”

Local residents and businesses were also asked for donations of food in the run-up to Christmas 2019 for people in the town “struggling for many other reasons yet not asking for help and support,” said Gloria.

With the coronavirus now still present, and many people feeling its impact, she’s urging people and businesses for support once more.

Gloria said: “I am once again getting ready to prepare and send out food parcels to those who would greatly welcome them in their time of need leading up to Christmas and the New Year.

“In addition to what we can supply ourselves, I am asking again the people of Saltash and the local area to help and support this on-going initiative by also donating a few items if possible, please.”

Donations can be dropped through the main door of the Railway Public House, to Nicky’s Glow Beads, or to Ronnie’s Fruit and Veg shop during opening hours: all three venues are in Fore Street, Saltash.

“Local businesses and residents are already kindly donating,” said Gloria, “and I would like to say a huge thank you to them all.”
