Liskeard U/10s continue to thrive on this exciting new small sided format. Entertaining Dobwalls VIIs they overcame spirited opposition to storm to a fourth successive victory. The home side pressed eagerly from the start only for their attacks to founder against the sturdy covering of an impressive Dan Ruark.
Venturing into midfield Dan was to meet his match in Chris Warren. A brave tackle from the latter, topped instantly by an incisive pass, gave Nathan Rice time to pick his spot. The boot swung. The ball flew. One nil.
On came the youngsters but stout defending, notably by Tom Furnell, restricted the visitors to breakaway attacks and only fleeting shot opportunities. This game is fast, and with both sides tiring in the second half the hard running strength of Liskeard's Sam Deacon was to prove decisive. As he drove the team forward from midfield chances were engineered for Chris Warren to sweetly hit a left footed second, and for the prolific Rice to notch an alert third - his sixth goal in five games.
Dobwalls fought on and in the dying minutes they claimed a fully merited two goal consolation. Well played both teams, and thanks to Shane Ruark and Mr Edwards for running the lines.
The Liskeard club is anxious now to form an U-9 squad in readiness for next season.
"Thanks to the Cricket Club and the Town Forum we have a superbly equipped venue for the now mandatory small sided game,' says. U/l0s manager Eric Westlake. "Here we can foster controlled and skilful teamwork. As a boy I went to both the Varley Lane School and the old Church School. Now I have lads from St Martins and Old Road in my squad, plus one from Trewidland. I'm proud to offer a facility for all the boys of the town, and for the girls too. The real key though is parental help."
Eric is also the club secretary. To find out more phone him on Liskeard 348706.
