DEVON and Cornwall Police are reminding members of the public that officers will seize fireworks if they are found in the possession of anyone under the age of 18 who is holding them illegally.

The warning came after the seizure of German-made pyrotechnics in Saltash on Friday from two boys aged 13 and 14.

A police spokesman said this week that while they want everyone to have a fun Bonfire Night, they will take action against anyone who breaks the law.

In the run-up to and on November 5, officers will be out on patrol enforcing regulations about the use and possession of fireworks. Officers can stop and search anyone they suspect may have prohibited fireworks and issue fines or fixed penalty notices to people who throw fireworks in the street.

Shopkeepers who sell fireworks to under 18s and anyone who uses or possesses them illegally could find themselves facing a fine of up to £5,000 and/or a prison sentence.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is also urging people to stay safe this November 5 and has once again teamed up with Devon and Cornwall Police for its firework safety campaign
