A sculpture of a Torpoint Ferry is being made at Carbeile Junior School - using old Yellow Pages directories.

The Torpoint school is taking part in a competition for schools in Cornwall which involves collecting out-of-date Yellow Pages.

Headteacher Mike Richards said: "We are collecting for the Cornwall Waste Paper Company who will be shredding the Yellow Pages for animal bedding.

"The new Yellow Pages are being delivered and to just throw out the old books would be a terrible waste.

"The competition ties in with assemblies I have led on caring for the environment and recycling.

"Anyone in the area can drop in Yellow Pages to the school before February 27 when they will be collected."

It is the first time that the Carbeile school has entered the competition which offers a prize for the child who takes in the most Yellow Pages throughout the county.

There are also prizes for the school that collects the most directories and for the best sculpture made from stacking up the books.

The Carbeile school has already received a large number of books to put towards its ferry sculpture - with one pupil taking in 32 copies!
