THE Inspector in charge of policing in East Cornwall has praised the ’fantastic social responsibility from everyone’ as the public heed instructions to stay at home. Insp Rupert Engley praised the response of residents in the district in a tweet on Saturday.
Over the sunny weekend, officers have posted photos of empty car parks on the coast.
On Friday, Sergeant Chris Chilcott said: ’I was on patrol in Seaton this evening this evening and only saw a handful of local dog walkers. A BIG thank you for helping with the fight against Covid-19.
Meanwhile PC Wright on patrol in Whitsand Bay on Saturday took a picture of the blue sky and empty car park at Freathy.
’Great to see everyone is staying away,’ he said, ’on a usual sunny weekend this car park would be packed.’
And later on Saturday, Sgt Chilcott was at the Saltash tunnel, where he said: ’For a Saturday evening, I was impressed with how quiet it was on the roads.’
While the overall response from the public to ’stay at home’ rules has been good, there are still some putting others at risk by doing unnecessary journeys, say Devon and Cornwall Police, such as a driver on his way from Gloucester to Truro to deliver a bike that had been purchased.
The force’s Chief Constable Sean Sawyer had this message for anyone not taking responsibility when he spoke on the BBC: ’If a £60 ticket makes you to do something which 684 people dying yesterday didn’t, you need to take a long look at yourself.’
