The drive to raise funds for a roof to cover Polperro School's swimming pool was given a huge boost recently by the Music in the Meadow event, featuring top local band Joey the Lips. The event raised a total of £5,000 through admission charges, sale of food and sponsorship of the event by local businesses. Headteacher Roger Carter explained that the friends of Polperro School are in the process of raising about £40,000 to pay for the installation of a retractable roof for the pool which will enable it to be used throughout the year, while allowing the children to continue to enjoy the open-air on warm summer days. 'We are about a third of the way there with the fundraising and hope to have it installed by this time next year,' he said. 'We place huge value here at Polperro on encouraging the children to learn to swim, because we are so close to the sea, but it has to be fun, and this will be great help.' Mr Carter added that thanks were due to all the sponsors, the Friends organisation, the musicians and the 550 people who came along to enjoy the evening of music. 'We are already planning a similar event for next year,' he added.
