Developing into one of the closest title races for many seasons only eight points separates the leading six Division One sides.

Liskeard and District League

Fountain Lions lead Section A by six points with four games left to play. Market checked their losing run and move into second place as London lose to bottom placed Legion B. Fourth placed Highway A and fifth placed Dobsons both lost.

Fountain Lions started quickly against Wheal Tor by winning eight of the first nine games. They then won six of the remaining nine to record a 14-4 win. Rod and Ivan Olver, Andy Maslem and Andy Wyatt all won five for the Lions. Colleen Bolitho and Derek Hayward, Stan Skews and Dave Clatworthy all won two with Tom Bolitho and Dave Skews being brushed.

Legion B went into an 8-4 lead over second placed London Inn. London came back winning the next three games but Legion won two of the last three games to get a much needed win. Alan Barber and Alan White won four, Clive Sargent and Trevor Keast, Bob Fricker and Les Dennis all won three for Legion B. Dougie Knight and Larry Penter, Andrew Bunt and Chris Penter all won three for the London.

Market got off to a slow start against Dobsons going 4-2 down after two rounds. However they then got their act into gear by winning all the remaining rounds 2-1 to run out 10-8 winners and move back into second place. Sonia Kelly and Bill Stephens scored half the games with five. Jim Kelly and Simon Harris won three for the Market. Eric Andrew and Andy Powell won five, Vic Bray and Colin Butler won two for Dobsons.

Highway A lost to Garrison 10-8 after starting off by going into a 4-2 lead. Garrison then won all the remaining rounds 2-1 to take all the points. Terry Lobb and Trevor Burton won four with both other pairs winning three each. Jennie Anthony and Rob Pearson won four, Peter Anthony and Gerald McDonald won three for Highway A.

Con Club B returned to winning ways after three defeats on the trot against Highway C. The game was level at three all but Con Club then won six of the next nine to go into a 9-6 lead and ran out 10-8 winners. Val and Sue Pryor, Gary and Steve Pryor all won five with James Wheeler and 'Snowy' Pryor being brushed. Nigel Williams and Francis Julian, Michelle Wilton and Sharon Julian all won three for the Highway C.

White Horse's lead is cut to two points at the top of Section B as they are held to a draw by the Fountain and challengers White Hart A win at the Legion. Market move up to third place.

White Hart went into a 6-3 lead over Fountain in the first half but Fountain came back to win the second 6-3 to share the points. Bernie Hoskins and Terry Kurn won five, George Keast and Phil Kurn won three for White Horse. Fred Markham and P Mason won four, Bob Young and Simon Parker won three for the Fountain.

White Hart A won a tight match against Legion A. White Hart were 6-3 down and then won seven of the last nine to take the points. B Bettison and K Allen won three, Tafy Lewis and John Thomas won five for the White Hart A. Colin Penwarden and Barry Lewis won four, Lee Penwarden and Mark Collins won three for Legion A.

Market B are mounting a strong challenge with another win, this time against Cheesewring to move into third place. Cheesewring went 5-4 up but Market responded by winning six of the last nine games to take all the points. N White and L Lawrence won five, John Vine and D Hines won four for the Market. Dawn Gregory and Jan Mitchell, Helen Windmill and Kevin Gregory all won three for Cheesewring.

Police B went into an 8-4 lead against Barley A but struggled to finally win 10-8. Dave Crocker won seven, Phil Waters took five, while Richard Bailey and Gary Cutter won three for the Police. Richard Freeman and Bill Denning won four, Lisa Haley and C Vincent won three for Barley A.

Legion C stormed into a 5-1 lead against White Hart B. White Hart B rallied to win all of the next six games to lead 7-5. Legion C came back to force the draw by winning four of the last six. Chrissie Haynes and Elaine Bendelow won four, Jim Rodda and Brian Clift won three for Legion A. All pairs won three each for White Hart B.

Barley B recorded their best win with a 12-6 win away to Lord Eliot. The score was 5-4 to the Eliot but then Barley won eight of the last nine games. Jamie Sweetlove and Amanda Gilmour won all six with support from Terry Falconer and Neil Cloake with four for Barley B. John Bartlett and Ian Gill won three for the Eliot.

Knock-Out Cup Semi-final

London won all the first three games against the Market. Market responded by winning four of the next six to be 5-4 down at the halfway stage. London repeated the scores in the second half to win a very hard fought game 11-8. Larry Penter and Dougie Knight won their first two games and lost the next four. Sonia Kelly and Bill Stephens lost the first four and won the last two. Andrew Tamblyn and Brian Martyn, Chris Penter and Andrew Bunt all won four for the London. Jim Kelly seven, Simon Harris, Rob Trevarthen and Graham Pengelly all won three for the Market.

The final will be between London and Highway C on 27th March.

Successful tournament

The first ever singles euchre tournament at Liskeard Constitutional Club came to an end on February 14 after 20 successful weeks

Eighteen players took part and found it very enjoyable. The eventual winner was Stuart Bettison, closely followed by Dave Cawrse. There will be another singles tournament starting in a few weeks. All club members are welcome.
