Royal Cornwall Show organisers have revealed entries remain high within the livestock and equine sections for this year’s event from June 7 to 9.

The pig section, which enjoyed a renaissance in recent years with the highest number of entries on record at last year’s show, has this year seen its second highest numbers in its history with 237 entries.

The Middle White, Gloucester Old Spot and Welsh pig breeds have all registered an uplift in numbers for 2018.

The sheep section, sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers, continues to enjoy strong support.

This year’s show will boast the third highest entry of sheep at 1,288. The 2017 event saw a new high surpassing 2016’s second highest turnout on record.

With 31 entries the Coloured Ryland sheep breed will, for the first time, have its own classes due to securing enough support.

British Charollais, Hampshire Down, North Country Cheviot, Roussin, Zwartbles, Whiteface Dartmoor, Beltex and Border Leicester sheep breeds also secured an uplift in numbers.

The fleece section has received 54 entries.

Dairy leads the way in the show’s cattle section with an increase in Jersey, Holstein and Ayrshire numbers this year.

The number of Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, British Charolais and British Simmental cattle within the beef section are also up.

A total of 548 stalls have been booked within the cattle section, which almost matches the 2017 total.

The equine section has received 1,079 entries to contest the numerous classes.

This represents a slight dip on last year’s entry, however Working Hunter and Highland ponies, Anglo and part bred Arabs and the Welsh ponies and cobs increased in number.

Christopher Riddle, secretary of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, said:

‘We had a particularly strong year in 2017, with record numbers in the sheep and pig entries so it is pleasing that entries this year are at levels close to previous highs.

‘The Royal Cornwall Show is an opportunity for the industry, which is in times of continued uncertainty, to showcase what it can do and it is reassuring to see it being grasped firmly with both hands.

‘We look forward to welcoming exhibitors from across the country complete with the highest quality livestock when the show opens.’
