Charging points are being created at more than 40 First Great Western railway stations.
The idea is that rail travellers leave their vehicles charging in the station car parks while they make their train journeys.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced that more than £9m is going to be invested nationally to increase the number of public charging points.
He made the announcement as a joint campaign between the Government and car manufacturers was launched to encourage more drivers to switch to electric or hybrid cars.
Mr Clegg said: 'Electric cars are one of the most promising of our green industries and we want to secure the UK's position as a global leader in both the production and adoption of these vehicles.
'The extremely low running costs of electric cars help drivers save money and we are allocating more than £9m to boost charging points across the country.'
At present there are more than 6,000 public charging points across the UK.
