SCHOOL children who joined forces with local police officers to tackle speeding drivers may have unearthed a safety problem. Pupils at St Stephen’s Primary in Saltash went on patrol in Long Park Road armed with a speed gun to measure the speed of cars passing the school. When drivers were above 24mph, the police officer flagged them down and the children asked questions such as: ‘How would you feel if you knocked me over?’ The drivers, who spoke to the children rather than be issued a ticket, were all very remorseful. Many people were unaware the area is actually a 20mph zone – most seemed to believe a 30mph limit applied. As a result of the exercise, the police will contact Cornwall Council highways officials to see if more warning signs are needed.
