Links with a local company are enabling students to gain high levels of manufacturing skill, says Liskeard School and Community College.
The school has forged a good relationship with Restormel Machine Ltd in Lostwithiel.
It was there that sixth former Will Kitto received expert guidance in using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machines and lathes to manufacture the parts for an impressive working gearbox.
Will’s use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) to plan and draw up his machine were commended by managing director at Restormel, Jim Underwood.
Mr Underwood has pledged to continue his support by training staff and students from Liskeard, said a school spokesperson.
‘We hope to continue working with Restormel in future with the new A-level Product Design course that starts this September,’ the spokesperson said.
‘Engineering and Electronics teacher Rob Meier and Engineering Technician James Barrett have both had CNC training at Restormel Machine this year.
‘The department is now looking for funding to purchase its own CNC milling machine in order for students to manufacture more complex real world products such as water turbines or types of engines.’
