Duchy College, Stoke Climsland is offering a free forest school training taster.

The three-hour session, on Tuesday, April 10 from 10am, is aimed at teachers, teaching assistants, nursery leaders or woodland professions wishing to specialise in the popular teaching method which uses outdoor learning to support children.

Stephanie Smart, forest school leader for Duchy College, said: ‘Forest schools offer a chance for children and adults to reconnect with nature, to build dens, light fires, climb trees and use tools in a supported environment.

‘As the positive links between the outdoor environment and good mental health also become clearer many colleges, schools and nurseries are putting Forest School on their curriculum and looking to recruit teachers and learning support staff with this qualification.

‘Focusing on outdoor teaching creates resilient, independent learners as a lot of forest school techniques develop curiosity and processes for answering your own questions.

‘It’s excellent for ensuring children are physically active throughout the day and ideal for younger children who struggle to concentrate in the confines of a classroom.’

During the taster delegates will look at learning a woodland craft activity, a fire activity, group games and den building.
