Young people from Cornwall are being offered the chance to spend a week in Tehidy Country Park with a group of young people from Brittany this Summer as part of an exciting project designed to help young people from different countries discover and share their common language roots and culture.
Twelve young Breton speakers aged 13 to 16 will arrive in Cornwall on July 14. They will then stay with a group of 12 young people from Cornwall at Tehidy until July 23. During their stay they will take part in numerous activities and visits, and share an opportunity to learn more about their common heritage.
The visit is being held as part of the Kernow-Breizh (KELT) project, which consists of a youth exchange to revitalise the Breton and Cornish languages, and which has grown out of Cornwall and Finistere’s councils’ long-standing partnership.
This year the project was granted a €12,000 (approx £9,300) grant from the Erasmus+ funding programme to support a scheme led by Breton youth organisation UBAPAR and Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek (KYK) in Cornwall to enable young people from Brittany and Cornwall to meet.
Applications to take part at a cost of £50 must be sent to the office of the Chairman of Cornwall Council, County Hall, Treyew Road, Truro TR1 3AY by May 20.
