Callington Town 1 Liskeard Athletic 0
Callington's steady climb up the league table continued with this hard fought but deserved victory over defending champions Liskeard at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday. The victory, courtesy of Wayne Mousella's 70th minute goal, lifted Town into 10th place in the league, with their fourth consecutive league win, to add to the 4-3 defeat of Bodmin in the League Cup two weeks ago. It is hard to pick any particular aspect of the home side's game that has led to this improvement but their team spirit, fitness and strong commitment has gone a long way in seeing a reversal in their fortunes. A good sized crowd was at hand to watch an even first half with both sides cancelling each other out and also playing good football on a surface that, despite the rain, was a credit to the hard-working groundstaff and won many plaudits from the visiting team and referee. Gradually, the home side began to flex their muscles and two players in particular were causing the visitors real problems. On the right wing, teenager Luke Avis-Riordan's deft touches were a pleasure to watch but it was midfield maestro Adam Reid who was the architect of Liskeard's downfall with his strong tackling and the continuing support he gave to his fellow players. The goal, when it came, arrived from the right and it fell to Mousella who steered the ball over the despairing Blues keeper at the second attempt, to the delight of the home fans. Despite eight minutes of injury time, Town held on to gain an important victory to take into tomorrow's home game with third-placed Wadebridge Town.
