Duchy Football League Division Four (East)
St Stephen Borough 0
This match, the final league game of the season for both clubs involved, was contested at St Anns Chapel due to pitch repairs already in progress at Callington's ground. Callington would like to thank their hosts for the hospitality shown towards them and has certainly strengthened an important link between rival clubs.
The game itself had nothing at stake as St Stephen had already had their position as runners-up confirmed, so pride was basically all that was left to play for. It was Callington seemed more up for the match, and the more experienced Borough side seemed content to absorb their opponent's attacks and just launch the ball forward hoping for somebody to be waiting on the end of it.
In heavy contrast, Callington did their utmost to keep the ball on the ground and play some neat football. It has been a hallmark of their season as Callington continue to bring their younger players into the senior side - a policy that more clubs should adopt, as home-grown talent is surely the best way forward. However, it was the older band of players who had the last say in this match, with Paul Brimmacombe playing what could well be his last game due to injury and work commitments. He certainly signed off in the best possible way. After missing a sitter, he managed to grab both of Callington's goals before the half-time break and he could well have got a hat-trick if he had used his brain instead of his heart. This team says everything about the new Callington set-up, bring in the younger, add a bit of experience and simply tell them to go out and enjoy their football and let the results follow.
