A man has been bailed until Monday, and the charges he faces changed, following the previously reported incident on the A38 in the Glynn Valley near Bodmin, that saw his car colliding with a house and both a vehicle and the building catching fire.
Devon and Cornwall Police say that at approximately 7.30pm on Sunday they received a call from a member of the public stating that the single vehicle had collided with the single-storey Newbridge Lodge near Bodmin Parkway station, causing the car and house to catch fire and trapping the driver in the process.
The scene was initially attended by officers from Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team (RPT), who evacuated the occupants of the house, Mr and Mrs Stevens, together with their six show dogs. Personnel from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service also attended, along with paramedics.
The single male occupant of the Vauxhall Astra had been extracted from the car by property owner Mr Stevens shortly before the police arrived. The driver was conscious and breathing, although in heavy shock and substantial pain. He was subsequently taken to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, where he was confirmed as having a broken arm and other soft tissue injuries.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall RPT, alongside collision investigation and fire scene investigation officers, attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours to allow a thorough investigation and prolonged damping down by the Fire and Rescue personnel.
The 27-year-old driver was subsequently arrested while still at Derriford Hospital on a charge of arson with intent, but this has been subsequently changed to a charge of criminal damage with intent to endanger life.
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that the man has been released on bail until Monday.
