A DOG owner has spoken of her distress at seeing her pet receive fatal injuries as it was savaged by another dog on a beach.

Camilla Reardon's little dog Jade, a Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross, was attacked on Second Beach at Looe.

Camilla, 22, and her partner Jon Hunt were walking their two small dogs, plus a family member's springer spaniel, on Sunday afternoon when a greyhound 'came out of nowhere' towards them, she said.

'We called the smaller dogs and tried to grab them because we thought the greyhound was going to go for them, but we weren't fast enough,' said Camilla.

'He just pinned her to the ground and mauled her. She was like a rag doll. My boyfriend got bitten on the hand as he tried to pull the dog off.'

The couple took Jade to the emergency vet in Callington where she was given pain relief and put on a drip, but later in the day she died.

'Because of the severity of her injuries, the shock and the loss of blood, because she was such a small dog, she died,' said Camilla, from Looe.

'She had damage to her stomach and they think possibly a broken spine.'

Camilla says that she has been left devastated by the loss of her pet.

Jon and Camilla reported the incident, but were told that no further action can be taken by police as no criminal offence has occurred.

Sgt Mick Howe, of Looe Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: 'It's a tragic incident. As it is a civil offence, there is no further police action in this matter. It has been recorded as a first incident, so that if it happens again, we can take further action.

'The owners of the greyhound are quite shaken about it – they are animal people themselves.'

The greyhound's owners have agreed to pay for the couple's vet bills.

But Camilla and Jon remain aggrieved. Jon said: 'I can't believe that there is no law against a dog killing another dog.'
