AT the Caradon Planning Committee West meeting on Thursday, April 20, common sense, a regard for the wishes of the people and concern that such a central site as the old Passmore Edwards Hospital site in Liskeard should be developed sensitively won the day. The original Passmore Edwards Hospital building is not to be demolished and the intense little box development proposal has been removed but the site can be developed. This is exactly what the local residents have been advocating right from the start and if only the Primary Care Trust had done its homework about the site there need not have been this long delay or aggravation caused by such an insensitive proposal. The representative from the PCT stated that the organisation had no idea of the considered importance of the building until about a week ago. This is untrue as I made that clear when I addressed the planning committee two months ago and so did several district councillors. I, on behalf of the local residents, wish to thank the district councillors, town council, the mayor and all other supporters for your efforts but urge you to keep your powder dry for the next proposal to ensure the site is developed for the good of Liskeard and district. May I also point out to the doubters who say that it doesn't matter what the people want the big boys will always get their way, sometimes people power works.
