Liskeard Athletic 0 St Blazey 3

St Blazey will be delighted to have kept their perfect League record in tact after this easier-than- expected victory at Lux Park, where Liskeard seemed to do everything they could to help their visitors. Aided by some inconsistent refereeing by Martin Smith, St Blazey established a grip on the game almost from the first whistle. Things, though, might have been different had Dan Nancarrow's second-minute header gone in instead of hitting the St Blazey crossbar. Former Liskeard striker Dominic Richardson has a happy knack of scoring against his old club, and that trend continued when the Looe-based, ex- Argyle striker scored twice in the first half. Liskeard never really recovered from that early double setback. With their defence dithering and their midfield submissive in the extreme, home strikers Nancarrow and Paul Baker were left to fight an unequal battle against the St Blazey rearguard. To be fair, the flow of the game was not helped by the referee, but while St Blazey used guile to work with the official, Liskeard appeared to feel the whole world was against them and that certainly did not help their cause. Half-time could not come soon enough for the Blues, but whatever Lux Park manager Dave Leonard said in the dressing-room did not appear to have any effect as Vercesi increased St Blazey's lead with a towering header two minutes after the restart. The rest of the match was as painful for the home faithful as it was joyous to the 'Green and Blacks', who created, but fortunately for Liskeard, missed many more chances to score. 'I can only apologise to everybody watching today for my side not making it a competitive game,' said a grim Leonard. 'As a player, I always competed but today none of my players did that and it was not acceptable; it will not happen again.' St Blazey manager Trevor Mewton was, understandably, a much happier man. 'I said last week that I would know a lot more about this squad after a week in which we have now played – and beaten – Bodmin, Parkway and Liskeard,' he said. 'In what is becoming a squad game, this very tough week has proved what a good squad we have developing at St Blazey.'
