A 14-year-old from Kelly Bray has become one of the youngest black belts in the area. Daniel Pethers, from Callington Shotokan Karate Club, passed his 1st Dan black belt grading during a weekend course in St Ives. Club instructor Ian Eldred said: 'It's a great achievement for Daniel and is a just reward for his dedication and training. Daniel is the youngest black belt in the club. 'He can be sure that his grading is well earned and his standard of karate will be respected at any club or association worldwide.' The course Daniel passed was taken by internationally renowned instructors from England. The panel was chaired by Sensei (teacher) Gerry Breeze, 7th Dan, and included Sensei Colin Putt from Plymouth and Sensei Mark Carrol, both 5th Dan senior instructors with the FBSKUI (Federation British Shotokan Karate International). Daniel is also a keen rugby player and enjoys running and cycling.
