THE 37th Annual Art Exhibition and Sale of Art in aid of Cancer Research UK was opened at Liskeard's Public Hall this week. Hundreds of people from all over Devon and Cornwall eagerly awaited the start of the exhibition on Tuesday, which was officially opened by town mayor, Sandra Preston. The exhibition offers a chance for amateur artists to display their work alongside professional works, as well as raising much-needed funds for the charity. Sam Williams, Cornwall's community fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, came up from Truro to attend the exhibition's opening night, and made a special presentation to the Liskeard and District Committee. The committee has been donating money to the charity since the 1950s, and, prior to the artwork going on sale, a certificate of thanks was presented by Sam Williams to the committee in honour of the £575,000 that had been donated to the charity to date. The paintings went on sale at 7.30pm on Tuesday night, with dozens of people queuing up in anticipation, ready to buy works that had caught their eye.
