Cricket- Wickham Wines Complementary Cup

Liskeard v St. Neot

This was the chance Liskeard had been waiting for ever since the Taverners had knocked them out of this competition last year. A strong and confident Liskeard team greeted the assembled troops of St. Neot.

On winning the toss the Taverners stand-in skipper A. Tamblyn elected to field. M. Rowe and T. Hislop opened the batting against the combined attack of Tamblyn and 'Shiny Boots' Clapham. The break through came early as Clapham bowled Rowe with his first ball and this allowed Miles to the middle. The two batmen started to lay a firm foundation to the innings as S. Rowe replaced Clapham and Jimmy Forsyth replaced Tamblyn.

After the swing of Rowe had finally induced an edge from Miles, only for it to be dropped it was up to Forsyth to tempt him into the big shot, which was duly caught on the boundary by Abbott. This brought White to the wicket who played a variety of shots before falling to Clapham in his second spell. The score now at 82 for 3 allowed Clue in to the middle and he set off in own quick scoring style. After a brief stop for yet another rain shower, Clue and Hislop had added 45 in 9 overs before Clapham claimed his first catch of the season as Clue mistimed a pull off Bunt. Enter Steve Marchant who produced a whirl wind attack on the bowling as he hit 32 off 24 balls to accelerate the total 187 for 4 at the close all backed up by a fine 64 from Hislop.

The Taverners went about the task of chasing the total with the varying styles of Rowe and Nicholls. After a reasonable scoring start and the exchange of bruises for 4's between Rowe and Rowe, Vince claimed the first wicket bowling S. Rowe. Abbott made a short visit before going the same way and it meant that Clapham joined Nicholls in the middle. These two steadied the ship and saw the change bowling of Marchant, Young and Gilliat.

They put on 68 before Nicholls ran down the wicket once too often and was stumped. Bunt continued the charge with Clapham as they took the attack to Liskeard with Clapham making his 50 with a six off Marchant into the football pitch. With runs flowing Liskeard reintroduced Gilliat who had an immediate impact as Bunt mistimed a drive and was well caught in the deep.

Gilliat continued to a wicket an over as Tamblyn, Searle, Forsyth and Cole all attempted to keep the momentum going. In the end a tired Clapham fell to Rowe and it was left to A. Searle and G. Kent to see the innings to a close 16 runs short of the target. Liskeard had won a good game and gained their revenge while St. Neot fell at the final stage once again.

A highlight in the Liskeard's innings was the excellent running between the wickets so often lacking. This was a very keenly contested local derby, with the accuracy of the bowlers and the determination of the rest of the side seeing the home side through.
