Cricket- Wickham Wines Competition
Liskeard v Trevone
With a chance of playing in the Wickham Wines complementary cup final, it took no words from skipper Dave Skews to fire his side up.
Liskeard won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first, with the restriction of eight overs per bowler the next decision was who to open with as a good start was needed. The reliable Rowe started from the road end and Gilliat from the rugby field end. It was Gilliat who became the early star getting the scalp of Dickinson with his third delivery. He kept up the good start returning figures of 8overs 4 maidens 3 for 11.
With the hunger shown by all the fielders and the accuracy of the all the bowlers who were asked to bowl Trevone could never get settled with only two batsmen reaching double figures ending on a meagre 68 all out.
At tea half the job was done with a place in the final Liskeard's unless they threw it away. But ten minutes into the break it started to rain lightly and then it poured down. It did stop long enough to inspect the pitch but while deciding how long to give it to dry the decision was made for the umpires as the heavens opened and put the wicket under water.
With the game having started a conclusion had to be reached and the toss of a coin was decided upon. The umpire had the honour of tossing the coin and the visiting skipper had the call and as earlier in the day called heads. After a little roll the coin stopped and following a brief glance came the loudest cheer of the day. Justice had seen to be done as Liskeard won the match. The players deserved their win after a sterling fielding display, with now a final to look forward to the final on Sunday September 5. Although the venue to not yet known coach will be organised and anyone wishing to go can contact the club.
