In last week’s Cornish Times, Spencer Ham of Callington Cricket Club asked the question, ‘Is the Isaac Foot Cup cricket’s first 20/20 trophy’?

According to mr Ivan Rowe, it isn indeed.

He said in a Facebook message: ‘From books which I have read and people whom I have spoken to, the Isaac Foot Cup could well be the oldest trophy for 20 over cricket on this planet.

‘Cornwall introduced 20 over cricket to the world, certainly to all the Commonwealth countries such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

‘So in essence, 20/20 cricket is certainly not a cricket tournament which is relatively new to the Duchy.

‘In West Cornwall, the 20-Over Vinter Cup competition was first played for in 1932 and apart from the war years has been in continual existence ever since.’

The Isaac Foot Cup was first played for in 1928. This year’s matches continue throughout June, starting on June 2 when Liskeard and St Neot meet. Finals Day, featuring two semis and the final, is at Callington Cricket Club (where all tournament matches are played) on July 10 (reserve date July 24).

The tournament has its own page on Facebook - www.facebook.com/isaacfootcup.
