Since 1996, a ground-breaking project initiated by England and Wales Cricket Board Staff Coach Ian Pemberton has given cricket enthusiasts the chance to train as coaches in the east of Cornwall. A local training course every two years has saved up to 100 miles of travel for each session and has put our area further into the mainstream.
Nearly thirty players have benefitted and many are passing on skills and good advice with more assurance and confidence. We need only look at the increase in local standards of youth cricket to see very tangible justification
The 2000 course is arranged for March. It will be based on sessions at Stoke Climsland, Callington and Saltash, using varied facilities. Places on the course are filling fast, so anyone not yet booked should contact Ian Pemberton on 01579 350451 or Coaches' Secretary Nigel Sanders on 01872 223322 urgently.
The cost to candidates is currently still ridiculously low at £20: many counties charge the real cost of around £100. The fee reflects the Cornwall Cricket Board's support for the Coaches' Association, which organises course for it, to the extent of underwriting the huge subsidy.
