Saltash travelled to second-placed Wadebridge on Monday knowing that a win would give them the Division Four East title and send them into the county divisional final. A close encounter between the division's best two sides was anticipated but Saltash proved to be worthy champions as they outplayed Wadebridge in every department. Indeed, had Saltash not relaxed towards the end of the innings when they allowed the last two batsmen to add 41 runs and lost two wickets themselves when only two runs were needed to win the game it would have been a complete whitewash. Even so Saltash won at a canter by six wickets with six overs to spare while Wadebridge face a tough trip to St Erme to clinch second place. Wadebridge opted to bat first on a worn strip and their much-vaunted batting line-up was left in tatters as Richard Durndell almost single handedly reduced them to 41-5. The batsmen could not decide how to play the master of seam and swing. Menhenick was bowled through the gate, Dix dragged one on second ball and Centini used his pad instead of his bat and was plumb in front. Hawken, who can be a very dangerous player, tamely lobbed a slower ball straight to Chris Simpson and the top order had disappeared without trace. Dave Tickner also proved to be effective with his medium pace swingers and had Hamilton and Craddock caught cheaply. At 59-6 with 29 overs gone it was expected that Ross Braund and Chris Simpson, with 95 wickets between them this season, would wrap up the tail in no time but Simpson in particular just could not get his line right and young Jeffries took advantage in making a valuable 34. Simpson yook three wickets but at a cost of 20 a piece as Saltash let Wadebridge off the hook as the tail moved the score from 87-8 to 128 all out with Bearne hitting some lusty blows at the end to finish unbeaten on 20 and Stoddard caught off the last ball of the innings for 10. Wadebridge opened up with pace bowler Hamilton but he was far too short on a painfully slow wicket and Braund had easy pickings through point to get Saltash off to a flier, forcing the early introduction of Centini's off cutters. Medium pacer Craddock was more accurate and tied Durndell down but Braund was scoring freely. With the score on 35 Braund suddenly had a rush of blood and called for a single that was never on only to be short of his ground when he was rightly sent back by Durndell. Kris Stephens was sent in early but he still has some work to do on his technique if he has ambitions to bat higher up the order on a regular basis as he inside edged his second ball to the keeper. Enter Chris Simpson, who has had a magnificent season. Keen to make up for a below par display with the ball he was soon into his stride, picking off the bowling with ease. Durndell was happy to tie the other end up with the occasional wristy cut but Simpson led the charge towards the title passing yet another 50 before holing out in the deep with two runs still needed. Durndell's long stay ended two balls later but Dave Tickner drove the next ball through the covers and lan Stevenson scampered two runs to ensure no further alarms.
